Protecting our gum tissue is not only
critical to the appearance of our smile and keeping our
natural teeth, it may also be imperative to our overall
health. Studies keep popping up indicating the
contribution of gum disease to other diseases of the body
such as heart disease. Researchers have discovered that
those with periodontal disease are not quite twice as
likely to suffer from coronary heart disease.
Is it possible for your gum health to
improve? The short answer is yes. There are basically two very
important factors that contribute to your gum health. Each is
very important. I'm speaking about home care and professional
care. It will not due to have one done without the other, they
both work hand-in-hand. If you attempt to get by on
professional care alone, you are headed for trouble. Ask any
dental professional and they will tell you that this is
true.
When it comes to gum health and professional
care, there is one kind of professional who specializes in this
area. He has additional training that general dentists don't
have. In addition, gum health is the focus of his practice. So
you see, just like there are heart specialists, there are also
these guys who specialize in gum health within the profession
of dentistry.
Based on my own personal experiences in this
arena, I can say that I received superb care in the
periodontist's office - as far as gum health is concerned. This
included the quality of the hygienists' cleaning. I found that
the periodontist's office was able to provide me with quite a
bit more information about making my gums healthy than my
general dentist provided. In the end, you have to be careful.
My dentists did not refer me. I had to refer myself to the
periodontist. I'm glad that I did.
