Periodontists -
What Do They Do?
Periodontists - what do they do? In a
nut shell, the periodontist is a highly
knowledgeable and skilled professional in the
treatment of gum disease. Just as an oncologist is a
doctor who specializes in the treatment of cancer, a
periodontist is a professional who after becoming a
dentist, has continued their education in order to
specialize in the field of Periodontal disease.
After checking the condition of your teeth, your
periodontist will usually have their dental hygienist clean
your teeth and remove as much plaque as is possible. They
will also instruct you in the proper procedure for keeping
your teeth as clean and healthy as possible.
With gum disease, pockets of plaque will build up around the teeth and
gums, as well as below the surface of the gums. One
of the first treatments that your periodontist will want
to achieve will be the removal of this plaque. This is
what is called scaling. If your periodontal disease is
not too advanced, this along with proper dental hygiene
may be enough to keep the disease from progressing.
If you continue to experience bleeding from the gums,
you may require further treatment. This treatment may
include a surgical procedure performed in order to remove
the remaining plaque beneath the gums and on the roots of
the teeth. Your periodontist will perform the surgery. Your
periodontist is also capable of performing many other
procedures, including bone and gum grafts and jaw
reconstruction as well as cosmetic procedures.
The primary objective of your periodontist is to keep
your gums as healthy as possible. This is in order that you
may avoid allowing the disease to progress to the point of
needing surgery. This will also give you the opportunity to
keep your own teeth for your lifetime, rather than needing
to use dentures. As you can see, a periodontist's job is
quite important. It is very important that you follow his
or her advice in order to keep your teeth and gums
healthy.
